1887, Montana. Stock certificate for 70 shares. Issued to and signed on verso and as president by Samuel T. Hauser (1833 1914). Educated as a civil engineer, he found his first employment, in 1854, on The Missouri Pacific Railway, but several years later followed the throng of emigrants to the Northwest, and, in 1862, prospected the upper waters of the Missouri river as far as Fort Benton and the upper waters of the Columbia River. In the Fall, he came East as far as the Bannock mines, and spent some time in mining in that region, and, in 1863, prospected along the route of the Lewis and Clarke expedition as far as the Yellowstone valley. Having accumulated sufficient means, Mr. Hauser opened a bank in Virginia City, Mont., in 1865, in partnership with N.P.Langford, and has since been closely identified with the business interest of that region. In 1866, Mr. Hauser organized The First National Bank of Helena, which city has since been his home. Several branch railroads in Montana, now united as The Northern Pacific & Montana, were built by him under contract. Star punch cancellation effects Hauser's signature as president only. Very fine.

1887, Montana. Stock certificate for 245 shareS. Issued to and signed on verso by E.L. Bonner. Also signed by S.T. Hauser as president. Punch cancellation effects Hauser's signature only. The Helena and Jefferson County Railroad gave Wickes Montana access to outside markets. Because of it, the mine, mill and camp enjoyed its peak years of prosperity through the rest of the 1880s. With Hauser's acquisition of the mine and mill and the arrival of the railroad, the community of Wickes flourished. It transformed from a sober alcohol-free community to a "rip-roaring" mining camp that extended 1 1/2 miles along the gulch. The camp had between 900 to 1500 residents and included five dance halls, 22 saloons, a general store, post office, two hotels, at least one meat market, a blacksmith shop and a Presbyterian church.

Hauser (1833 - 1914), pioneer, miner, capitalist and territorial governor of Montana. One of Montana's most prolific business figures. Some glue bleed through from verso from attached stock transfer form. Star punch cancellations affect Hauser's signature, Power's is unaffected. Fine.
