Organized and chartered in 1881, The California Southern Railroad Company was a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Connecting San Diego with what is today Barstow, CA, the line formed the western end of the Santa Fe’s transcontinental railroad connection to Chicago.
