William A. Paine. Michigan. 1923. A "Lake Copper Company" stock certificate for 50 shares. Green/Black. Vignette of seated female allegorical figure with workers in background. Signed by William Paine as president. Investment banker. Paine worked as a clerk in the Boston bank house of Blackstone National Bank from 1873-1880 becoming head of the firm in 1880. He was a Co-Founder of one of America’s most well known investment banking and brokerage houses. Stamp and punch cancelled, including two star punch holes through Paine's signature. It is in fine condition overall.

The Franco-Texan Land Company
1876, Texas. Stock certificate for one share. Engraved triple-vignetted certificate depicting a female figure flanked by agriculture scenes at both sides. Translations are present in both French and German at bottom panel to facilitate use by European shareholders. Chartered in 1876, the company originated as part of the land grant made by the Texas legislature to the Memphis, El Paso and Pacific Railroad. The company was entangled with John C. Fremont’s purported “French Bond Scandal” in which has was prosecuted in absentia by the French government. An attractive certificate with an intriguing history. Uncancelled and Extremely Fine.
