FILLMORE, MILLARD
Fillmore served as comptroller of the State of New York, a position he held from January 1848 to February 1849, at which time he resigned to take office as Vice-President of the United States under Zachary Taylor. Upon Taylor's sudden death in July 1850, Fillmore became President.

Signed as comptroller of the State of New York by MILLARD FILLMORE MILLARD FILLMORE, MONTHS BEFORE BEING ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT, SIGNS A HUDSON AND BERKSHIRE RAILROAD COMPANY BOND AS NEW YORK STATE COMPTROLLER MILLARD FILLMORE (1800-1874). Thirteenth President. DS. 1pp. 14” x 14 1/2”. Hudson [New York]. September 15, 1848. A “Hudson & Berkshire Rail-Road Co.” bond signed “Millard Fillmore” as the New York State Comptroller. The one thousand-dollar bond has thirty-one coupons for thirty-five dollars remaining attached, although four coupons have been removed. The bond states in part: “…the Hudson and Berkshire Rail-Road Company, Acknowledges themselves indebted to the Comptroller of the State of New York, for the use of the holder of this Bond, in the sum of One Thousand Dollars…they promise to pay at the Mechanics’ Bank, in the City of New York…with interest at the rate of seven percent per annum…" The bond, printed on paper with elaborate border engravings, is in fine condition. Coupons below. There are four punch holes through Fillmore’s dark signature.

Very Rare New York & Erie Railroad Company Bond Signed On Verso By Millard Fillmore As Comptroller

Attached red seal at lower left, revenue stamp at upper right. Signed on verso as comptroller of New York by MILLARD FILLMORE. (1800-1874). Thirteenth President of the United States. Upon Taylor’s sudden death in July 1850, Fillmore became President. One of less than ten that originally surfaced. A fine autographed railroad rarity. The top margin has significant paper loss and some dampstaining as is typical for this piece. Stamp and perf cancelled, neither affecting Fillmore's signature.
